Hatchet: It lived up to the hype - Tucker Gergen

“I don’t cry, I don’t really show emotion, I don’t like sobby movies because they don’t make me cry. The first chapter of Hatchet was the best piece of creative art I have ever seen, read or heard. Period. Some come close but this made me cry. Not a movie, a book was the first thing to make me tear up in a long time.”

This is what I said for my first review of the book of just the first chapter. It is a high bar to hold up to and it does it quite well. It takes something as simple as making a spear and makes it interesting and makes you interested and invested in this city boy who slowly learns as he puts it the rules of the forest.

Food first

        Use everything

Never get lazy or it can all come crashing down

        You are never safe

As I said in my previous review the book is about a kid who as far as we know lives comfortably and then he is stranded in the middle of the forest with nothing but a hatchet. It is a simple premise that anyone can do. The good part is how detailed it gets and it gets you invested in this guy you practically learn nothing about.

Theres not much to say other than this is a great book check it out and you will have a great time. I guess the book could’ve looked more into Brians past life a little more. But thats a stylistic opinion and it still did that a little in the beginning. 9/10

  1. I absolutely LOVE hatchet. It is one of, if not my favorite book ever. I love how it talks about a random kid being trapped in a forest being forced to survive against the harsh forces of nature. There is a sequel you should read called Brians Winter. I also recommend many other of Gary Paulsen's works, like The River, which is very good.
