The Hobbit, by J.R.R Tolkien
The story begins with a hobbit living peacefully at Bag End. His name is Bilbo Baggins. For a basic summary, hobbits are basically humans, but half of their size, and they live in holes. Bilbo likes living at Bag End, which is near the popular city of Hobbiton. One day an old wizard, Gandalf, comes to Bilbo's house and asks him to go on an adventure with a group of dwarves. They want Bilbo to go with them and take back some treasure that was stolen from them by the dragon, Smaug. At first, Bilbo is very scared to leave his home, and the dwarves aren't so sure why Gandalf wants him to be with them.
But anyway, they set out and all except Gandalf soon get captured by three trolls. Gandalf tricks these troll to stay outside when the sun comes up, and they turn to stone. After, each of the party gets weapons from the trolls' camp. Gandalf and the dwarf leader, Thorin, get magical weapons.
Next, the party goes to the Elvish stronghold of Rivendell and their leader tells them to go to Misty Mountains. When they reach the mountains, they get captured by goblins, but Gandalf leads them out of the mountains. Everything went right except one thing, they left Bilbo behind.
Wandering through the tunnels of the mountain, Bilbo finds a golden ring on the ground, and takes it, and that's when he meets a creature called Gollum, who wants to eat him. The two have a contest of riddles to decide Bilbo's fate, an then Bilbo wins by asking Gollum, "What have I got in my pocket?" Gollum wants to eat him anyway, and he goes back into his house to fetch a magic ring that turns you invisible. It turns out, the ring Bilbo found was Gollum's ring, and Bilbo uses it to escape Gollum and the goblins.
When Bilbo escapes the mountains, he finds that the party has left. He soon meets up with them, and then they get attacked by a group of evil wolves called Wargs chase them, but then they are saved by a group of great eagles and a creature that can turn from a bear into a human.
They make their way into the dark forest of Mirkwood, which is not good, and to make matters worse, Gandalf abandons them to take care of urgent business. The rest of the party gets stuck in some big webs made by giant spiders, and Bilbo rescues them by using his magic ring and sword and slays the spiders. Soon after they get captured by a group of wood elves, and with the help of Bilbo's ring, slip away. The Dwarves and Bilbo arrive at Lake Town, a town ruled by humans, and at that place is Smaug, who has Thorin's treasure. Bilbo goes into the mountain where Smaug lives and figures out that his weak point is his heart. Bilbo takes a golden cup which makes Smaug angry, and then he flies out but gets shot in the heart by an archer, not before burning Lake Town to the ground.
Soon after, the humans want some treasure from Thorin for compensation, but Thorin greedily refuses. The humans lay siege on the Dwarves, and Bilbo sneaks out trying to make peace. When Thorin finds out, he is mad and tries to kill Bilbo, but then Gandalf comes in and saves him at the last moment.
At this moment, an army of goblins and wargs march on the mountain, and the Humans, Dwarves, and Elves are forced to team up and fight against them. The goblins nearly win the battle, but they lose with the help of the bear creature and the eagles.
After this, Bilbo and Gandalf return home and live in contentment for a long time, until the events of my last blog post happens.
Did you like the book? I tried to read it about 3 times but was only able to get at most a third of the way through before I got too bored and dropped it. I loved the movie though. The plot was definitely very interesting, as shown by your post. I think it was the main character/narrator, Bilbo, that made it less engaging. Would you agree?
ReplyDeletenice, I've heard of the book but I've never known what its actually like until now
