Tucker Gergen - Savvy, The best Book you never heard of
Savvy has an interesting premise. What if when you became 13, you got a super power, or in this book, a savvy, but just this one family. The powers are always oddly specific, but create interesting ideas and scenarios. The powers are like, what if this person could read minds, but only people with ink on them, what if this person can control radio waves and save songs in little glass bottles, and what if this kid could control the weather, but only with his emotions? Strange powers you never thought of, but interesting ones none the less.
The protagonist is a girl that is about to turn 13 called Mib, but her father a day before her birthday gets in a car crash and can't be at her most important day of her life. Her father is her idol, he doesn’t have a savvy because he was married in, but he fits with the family so well, she loves that about him. Some of the family members even joke about him having a savvy with fitting in.
Sense this is such an important day for Mib they throw a huge party for her, they have an entire church for her and her grampa's music is playing from glass bottles. But she is sad her dad couldn’t be here. She was already shy and this just made it worse for her. When she accidentally wakes someone up she finds out that is her savvy and wants to go help her dad. She brings some friends and somehow talks their way onto a missionary’s bus to go to the hospital where Mib’s dad is.
The friends consist of the preacher's son, Will, a little trouble maker, Mibs older brother, Fish, who can control the weather, but he isn’t very good at it and the bus driver, selling Bibles, an overall great guy.
Pros
● Characters are great
● The plot is amazing even if it jumps around a little
● The ideas, have you thought of super power like containing music in a glass bottle. Or just the power to wake people up and the author uses them so creativly
● Jerald law uses boring ideas and makes them interesting, like “what kind of power is waking people up” than makes an entire book about it
● Mibs' family is very detailed. You get off hand talking about how they used to live in Florida but Fish’s power caused a huge hurricane. Little things like that make the story so detailed in a small space.
Cons
● The Bus driver is weirdly accepting of three random kids coming on to his bus to go to a hospital.
● One of the last scenes didn’t need to be there but it was good so I’ll give it a pass.
As you see there are many pros to Savvy and I have to nitpick to get a signal con. I did read this book a long time ago so it might be nostalgia, and i might get some fine details wrong, but even if this still the best book I’ve ever read, even if that is nostalgia talking. I would deffently reccomend, 9/10

ReplyDeleteSounds like a complicated story. But also pretty cool! I like the title of the post because it is a funny message. There are many AMAZING books out there that not many people are aware of. This was a good idea to spread the word!
